On Friday, April 11, 2025, Wake Forest University hosted acclaimed author R.F. Kuang for an evening of critical dialogue and reflection, co-sponsored by the Environment and Sustainability Program (ENV). In collaboration with Deacon Diverse Reads and other campus partners, the event brought together students, faculty, and staff for a student-led conversation exploring themes central to Kuang’s work, including Japanese imperialism, the ethics of drug use, and the spiritual and political weaponization of religion.

The discussion concluded with a public Q&A, followed by a book signing and giveaway of Kuang’s published works. For the ENV Program, this event highlighted the role of storytelling in shaping more equitable and sustainable futures, and reaffirmed the importance of centering diverse perspectives in conversations about justice, identity, and the global systems that connect them.
